Aluminum-Bodied Shelby Cobra CSX4000 5-Speed
This Shelby is an aluminum-bodied CSX4000 continuation model that was assembled in 2003 by H.R.E. Motorcars of Freeport, New York, and utilizes a dark blue aluminum body over a tubular chassis. Power is provided by a Shelby 427ci V8 linked to a Tremec five-speed manual transmission, and work in early 2025 consisted of disassembling the engine and replacing the bearings, gaskets, and clutch kit. The car rides on adjustable coilovers and Halibrand-style 15″ knockoff wheels, and further equipment includes a rebuilt Holley carburetor, an aluminum dual-plane intake manifold, an MSD distributor, and four-wheel disc brakes. Inside, the black leather bucket seats are equipped with Simpson harnesses and joined by a Smiths GPS speedometer, Shelby-branded instrumentation, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. This Cobra CSX4000 is now offered by the selling dealer with a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, service records, a tonneau cover, and transferable New York registration describing the vehicle as a 1965 Shelby Conv.
The aluminum bodywork is finished in dark blue and exterior elements include a roll hoop, a hood scoop, wind wings, sun visors, quick jack bumperettes, a LeMans-style fuel filler cap, and side-exit exhaust pipes. Close-up photos of the paint, trim, imperfections, and paint meter readings are provided in the gallery.
The 15″ Halibrand-style wheels are secured with safety-wired three-eared knockoffs, and they wear BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires that have 2015 production date codes. The car rides on adjustable coilovers at all four corners, and braking is handled by four-wheel discs.
The cockpit features bucket seats upholstered in black leather, and interior elements include Simpson latch-and-link harnesses, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and a fire extinguisher. A black vinyl tonneau cover is displayed in place in the gallery.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a padded black dashboard fascia, and the Smiths reverse-sweep 180-mph GPS speedometer is joined by a suite of Shelby-branded instrumentation. The digital odometer shows 3,800 miles. The speedometer was installed in February 2025, and the removed Shelby-branded odometer is included in the sale and photographed in the gallery.
The 427ci V8 utilizes an aluminum Shelby block, a forged crankshaft, H-beam connecting rods, and Liberty Performance moly piston rings, and it breathes through a rebuilt Holley carburetor atop an aluminum Shelby intake manifold with a “turkey pan” cool air box. An aluminum radiator and an electric fan provide cooling power.
Engine work completed by Danbury Competition Engines of Connecticut in March 2025 included replacing the rod, main, and camshaft bearings along with the oil cooler, starter, battery, engine mounts, and gaskets for the intake manifold, oil pan, valve covers, and cylinder heads. The engine subsequently produced 541 horsepower and 549 lb-ft of torque on a dynamometer.
The Tremec TKO five-speed manual transmission was fitted with a McLeod clutch kit and a replacement throwout bearing in March 2025. Additional underside photos are provided in the gallery below.
The Shelby American Statement of Origin details initial delivery to HRE Motorcars of Freeport, New York, along with production information.
The vehicle is being sold on its expired transferable New York registration, which serves as an ownership document in New York.
