No Reserve: 1939 Lancia Aprilia Berlina Lusso

This 1939 Lancia Aprilia Berlina is a right-hand-drive Lusso example that was registered in Italy through its purchase by a California-based owner in the early 1960s, after which it spent several additional years in Europe before being brought to the US in the 1970s. Chassis 9341 was donated to the San Diego Automotive Museum in the late 2010s, and a subsequent change of hands relocated the car to New York, where it was purchased by the selling dealer in 2025. Finished in aged blue paint over red leather upholstery, the pillarless four-door sedan is powered by a narrow-angle 1,352cc V4 mated to a four-speed manual transmission. It rides on metric steel wheels with Lancia-branded covers in addition to four-wheel independent suspension and hydraulic drum brakes. A single Zenith downdraft carburetor, a split rear window, and running boards are further appointments. This Aprilia Lusso is now offered by the selling dealer at no reserve in New York with a previous Italian libretto and a California title.

Debuting at the Paris Motor Show as the last design overseen by Vincenzo Lancia, the Aprilia entered production in 1937 and featured a streamlined shape influenced by wind tunnel experimentation. It was offered primarily as a pillarless four-door sedan with construction of the unibody handled in-house by Lancia, though the model was also produced in chassis-only form so that coachbuilders could create their own bodywork. The Aprilia was produced in two series through 1949, during which time it secured victories in the 2000cc Sports and 1500cc Touring classes at the 1947 Mille Miglia.

This Series I example wears an aged blue finish with areas of missing paint and corrosion. Running boards were specific to the Lusso model, and further exterior details include dual side mirrors, window rain guards, and a split rear window. The right trafficator is missing as is the right rub strip along the curved front bumper.

First used by Lancia on the 1922 Lambda, the sliding-pillar independent front suspension design comprises coil springs and adjustable shocks contained in oil around vertical pins anchored to either end of a beam axle, while independent rear suspension incorporates semi-trailing arms, torsion bars, and transverse leaf springs. Stopping is handled by hydraulic drum brakes all around. Body-color 400mm steel wheels with ivory-painted centers wear Lancia-branded hubcaps and are mounted with 165-series Michelin X tires.

The right-hand-drive cabin houses a pair of low-back front bucket seats trimmed in red leather that extends to the door panels and rear seats. Latch-and-link lap belts are equipped for the front occupants, and additional appointments include map pockets, rubber floor linings, and a fold-down rear armrest. The headliner is deteriorating, and wear is visible on the seating surfaces.

A three-spoke steering wheel fronts Lusso-specific square instrumentation including a 160-km/h speedometer, a fuel level gauge, a thermometer, and a clock. The four-digit odometer shows 1,400 kilometers (~900 miles), approximately 20 of which have been added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 1,352cc V4 features a 19° angle between cylinder banks with both banks topped by a single detachable cylinder head containing hemispherical combustion chambers. The engine is equipped with a chain-driven camshaft, and induction is through a single Zenith downdraft carburetor, and the engine’s output was factory-rated at 48 horsepower. Work performed in 2021 involved rebuilding the water pump as well as replacing the water pump belt, fuel pump, condenser, battery, and spark plugs.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Corrosion and areas of rust-through are present along the underside, additional photos of which are shown in the gallery below.

The current California title carries a “Title Only” notation.
